The birth of Nagarahole National Park can be traced to the notification of 285 Sq. km. Game Reserve way back in 1955, which included the reserve forests of Arkeri, Hatgat and Nalkeri in Kodagu. Subsequently, in 1974, reserved forests from the adjoining Mysore district were added to the Nagarahole Game Reserve, which was upgraded to the status of a National Park covering 643 sq. km.
It has two major areas (gates) where the forest department conducts Safaris and also where majority resorts are situated. One is near the Antharasanthe in Mysore District (Red Earth is very close to this gate) and other is near Kutta (or Hunsur) inCoorg district. Both the gates are separated by approximately 50kms (approx one hour drive). It starts near Hunsur by the entrance gate to Nagarhole (northern part while Kabini is in the southern part) and that location is called Veeranahosahalli, Karnataka and can be searched by that name on Google Maps (or geeky guys like us can use this Lat/Lng info which is [12.170584, 76.197681]) and is approx 20 kms from Hunsur Town. It also picks up people from the Nagarhole Office Reception area which is inside the forest and approx 15kms from the Kutta side of the Nagarhole. which suits travelers staying at the Kutta/Coorg Side.
Flora
The vegetation in this park predominantly comprises of moist, tropical and mixed deciduous forest, with some portions being the dry deciduous type. Rosewood, Sandalwood, Teakwood and Silver Oak are some of the more commercially important and easily available trees in this area. Dry deciduous trees include Indian Kino Tree, Crepe myrtle, Grewiatilaefolia, Crocodile Bark and Axlewood. Apart from these Cotton tree, Golden shower tree, Kadam, Tick clover, Ficus, India gooseberry, Tadasalu (Grewia tilaefolia) Horse nettles, Lantana, Bonesets, Mathi (Terminalia tomentosa), Honne (Pterocarpus marsupium) Nandi (Lagerstroemia lanceolata), and Clumping bamboo etc. can also be found germinating here.
Fauna
The park is also full of herbivorous animals like Spotted Deer, Barking Deer, Four-Horned Antelope, Sambar, Elephant, Gaur and Wild Boar. Bamboo thickets and luxurious forests provide the perfect backdrop to watch elephants happily roaming in their natural surroundings. Other commonly available mammals include Mongoose, Giant Flying Squirrel, Slender Loris, Bonnet Macaque, Porcupine, Mouse-Deer, Jackal, Pangolin and Hare.
This is one of the best activities for all age groups and types of people that does not involves great will power and strength. It is also a great way to unwind and learn a lot about nature in the most natural way. A walk along the Nagarhole National Park though the verdure forests, gives a feel of lush nature. You can hear the birds chirping in their habitat away from the traffic noises and busy life. You may spot some really great species in the distance while doing bird watching of various species.
There is a place where elephants are trained. There is space for doing other activities so you can also watch the elephants while their mahouts are taking them for rounds. These huge creatures would like to see the people and there are very few people taking an elephant ride on their back. It is mostly only the trainers who are sitting on their back. Moreover, there are various activities to do here such as a bonfire, staying at a boutique resort and admiring River Kabini.
