Bandipur National Park second highest Tiger population in India. Bandipur National Park is located in Gundulpet taluk, Chamarajanagar district. Park is the part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve making it largest protected area in Southern India and largest habitant of Wild Elephants in South Asia. Bandipur National Park shares its boundary with 3 other National park namely Nagarahole National Park, Wayanad National Park and Mudumalai National park. There is ban of traffic from 9 PM to 6 AM of dusk to dawn to help to drawn down the death rate of wildlife.
Situated in Karnataka, Bandipur National Park was once the hunting grounds of the Maharaja of Mysore. It was later established as a reserve in 1974 under Project Tiger and these deciduous forests rich in wildlife have become a popular tourist attraction since then. It is 80 km from Mysore enrooted Ooty in Tamil Nadu. Due to a lot of wildlife casualties because of speeding vehicles that go through the park, a ban on traffic between 9 PM to 6 AM has been established to ensure the safety of the animals of the park.
Flora
Bandipur supports a wide range of timber trees including: teak (Tectona grandis), rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia), sandalwood (Santalum album V), Indian-laurel (Terminalia tomentosa), Indian kino tree (Pterocarpus marsupium), giant clumping bamboo (Dendrocalamus strictus), clumping bamboo (Bambusa arundinacea) and Grewia tiliaefolia. There are also several notable flowering and fruiting trees and shrubs including: kadam tree (Adina cordifolia), Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis), crape-myrtle (Lagerstroemia lanceolata), axlewood (Anogeissus latifolia), black myrobalan (Terminalia chebula), Schleichera trijuga, Odina wodiar, flame of the forest (Butea monosperma), golden shower tree (Cassia fistula), satinwood (Chloroxylon swietenia), black cutch (Acacia catechu), Shorea talura (E), indigoberry (Randia uliginosa).
Fauna
Bandipur National Park harbours Indian elephant, gaur, Bengal tiger, sloth bear, mugger crocodile, Indian rock python, four-horned antelope, golden jackal and dhole.
The east flowing Moyar river, that is a tributary of the Cauvery, flows through Mudumalai, the southern boundary of Bandipur Park and Wayanad, through forests of teak, rubber and eucalyptus plantations.The Kabini flows by the Bandipur Park on the northern boundary. Spend a pleasant sunrise or sunset by the Moyar or Kabini riverside, which are frequented by elephants and other smaller animals during summer.
Safaris apart, a leisurely stroll through at your own pace is sure to be most gratifying in the park. You can take a trek into the Bandipur Park with a guide from the Forest Department. There are anti-poaching camps along the routes that can be used as trekkers’ halt too. Carry water bottles and a camera along, and you are set for a great outing.
Morning our representative will meet you at your residence followed by drive to Bandipur National Park. En-route one can visit Srirangapatnam (Optional), famous for the Tipu Sultan's former capital. Srirangapatnam is a picturesque island in the Cauvery River. The biggest of the three islands in the River Cauvery, it is about 5 km long and 2 km wide. Further visit to Mysore, later drive to Bandipur. On arrival, check in at the wildlife resort. Evening enjoy the pleasant surroundings. Overnight stay at resort. Bandipur situates between the foothills of western ghat and nilgiri mountains. Upon arrival check in at wildlife resort. Rest of the day leisure to enjoy the calm serenity of the forest resort. Dinner and overnight stay at resort.
Today we will wake a little early and get ready for our first Jungle experience to spot the wildlife. We will board safari van (open canter) to explore the Bandipur National Park. Later return to the resort for fresh-n-up and breakfast. After breakfast it’s time to enjoy the serenity around the resort or one can participate in the various house activities. After lunch we will again get ready for wildlife exploration & birding within the periphery of the national park. This we will be on foot and will be doing a guided walk to explore its amazing wildlife. Later in the evening return to the resort. Evening enjoy the activities offered by the resort. Dinner and overnight stay at resort. Bandipur was once a private hunting reserve for the Maharaja of the Kingdom of Mysore. It has remarkable variety of flora and fauna. Bandipur is home to Leopard, Asiatic Wild Dogs, Stripped Hyenas, Jackals, Jungle Cats, Leopard Cats, Rusty Spotted Cats, Palm Civet, Small Indian Civets, Otters and four different species of Mongooses (the common stripe necked, brown and ruddy mongooses), Gaur, Sambar, Cheetal, Muntjac, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Four-Horn Antelope, Pangolin, Indian Porcupine, Fruit Bat, Spender Loris, Langur, Bonnet Macaque, Wild Pig, Black Saped Hare and variety of reptiles such as Rock Python, Cobra, Marsh Crocodile, Monitor Lizard, Rat Snake, Wolf Snake, Common Krait, Runel's Viper Bamboo Pit Viper and Green Keel Back are also found here.
Morning after breakfast we will visit Venugopalaswamy temple at Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta. It is a hill located at a height of 1450m and is extensively wooded. It is also the highest peak in the Bandipur National Park. The view from here is worth viewing. It lies in the core area of the Bandipur National Park and is frequented by wild life including elephants. Return to the resort for fresh-n-up &breakfast. After breakfast leave for Bangalore.
